Kings Daughter

When Surrey Frills were asked to style rock/pop band, Kings Daughters for their latest music video, we knew we had to assemble the best team possible. And we didn’t have to look far.

Dorking based stylists, mum & daughter duo, Marie Gibbens and Claire Hams collaborated with four local independents to produce a magical video shoot that will hopefully garner mass audience appeal.

Having previously styled lead singer, Talia Dean for a magazine cover shoot, Talia was already familiar with our work. We met the other two band members guitarist, Issy Lycell and drummer Vicky O’Leon via zoom to talk about the songs narrative and how we envisaged bringing the aesthetic to life through wardrobe.

The song is called Dancing in the Rain and the theme is about learning to do just that after ‘the storm’.

It’s essentially a song about grief-losing somebody close to you but knowing that person is still with you- an angel by my side” says Talia who wrote the lyrics after the loss of a very close friend.

The Silent Pool in Albury was the venue for the shoot and together we decided to create a look that reflected the pool’s folklore mystery and rural beauty.

We imagined feminine and ethereal dresses with undertones of empowerment and we also wanted to stay true to the band’s raw and original talent by dressing them in preloved and vintage clothes and accessories.

So we headed straight to Michele’s Dress Agency in Old Kings Court to source some truly amazing pieces.

Michele has been trading here for more than ten years and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of her stock. The carefully curated display offered up a wonderful range of designer, contemporary brands and vintage gems.

We held the fitting at the Mayflower Spa in West Street. Owners Vicky and Andy have created an oasis of calm here, providing an holistic experience with an emphasis on customer wellbeing. The room allocated for the fitting was perfect; spacious and serene with plush sofas and flickering candles.

We all know that finding a great hairdresser can be an emotional rollercoaster- but we found the best in the business-award winning hair stylist, Teresa Weller Hair Art. Her eponymous salon sits in the centre of Dorking’s high street. Inspired by the cascading curls of the Pre-Raphaelites, Teresa added extensions to each girls hair giving a fabulously full look. Using a selection of beautiful blooms provided by Flowers by Elaine – another Dorking High Street business, Teresa threaded the fresh florals, fauna and feathers into the hair creating magical masterpieces.

The photoshoot could not have gone better, the band were delighted with their outfits, hair and make-up which allowed then to seamlessly express the sentiment of the song’s narrative.

It was a great day for all of us and a great day for Dorking too!

The single Dancing in the Rain by Kings Daughters was released on 26th September.
