How to pay your BID Levy bill

While bills are seldom welcome, you can be confident your levy payment is contributing to the good of our community. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I find my reference number to pay?

A: You can find that on your BID Levy Bill, called Account Reference, it is 9 digits long and starts with a “4”. If you cannot find your bill contact Mole Valley District Council on 01306 879295 and they will be able to advise.

Q: If I opt to pay in two instalments, will I get a reminder to pay my second instalment?

A: You will not be sent a second bill so if you opt to pay in two instalments it is best to set a calendar reminder or arrange a standing order for the second instalment.  If you pay your 1st April 2025 instalment on time but miss the 2nd instalment due on 1st October 2025, you will receive a Reminder Notice in early November. If you pay upon receiving the notice, no further action is taken. However, failure to pay may result in formal recovery procedures, including a Summons and additional recovery costs.

Q: How does the BID levy get spent?

A: The BID levy funds key town centre initiatives, including the Christmas Festival, greening of the town such as hanging baskets and planters, campaigns and initiatives such as Wedding Week, Restaurant Week, Surrey Day, School holiday activities and a new Walking Festival. These initiatives aim to boost footfall and make Dorking a vibrant destination.

It also supports training for businesses and staff, networking opportunities, and other initiatives shaped by BID member feedback. We believe collaboration strengthens our community.

The BID addresses business concerns with relevant authorities. During the West Street closure, it secured a simpler claims process from Thames Water, organised signage, obtained funding for a free family event, arranged free business parking permits, and provided accountant advice to help businesses with claims.

Spending is approved by a board of local business owners and community figures. Budget details are on your Levy bill and can also be viewed here. We welcome ideas and feedback, so get in touch.

Q: What should I do if I’m having trouble paying my levy?

A: Contact Mole Valley District Council on 01306 879295 and they will be able to advise the best way to address this.

Q: What happens if I don’t pay my levy?

A: Depending on how far behind your payments are you will either receive a reminder or a courts summons. Persistent non payment will result in bailiff action. BID levy money goes directly into supporting the town centre community so non payment can have an impact on what initiatives can be run.

If you are having trouble paying or have any queries over payment, it is always best to contact Mole Valley District Council on 01306 879295 and they will be able to advise.

Q: I’m a Voluntary BID Levy Payer, how do I pay my bill?

A: Voluntary BID Levy Payers will receive a separate invoice direct from the BID sometime during March. Details of how to pay will be on the invoice. Voluntary Levies are paid directly to the BID and not via Mole Valley District Council.
