Dorking Clock Centre team outside their South Street shop in Dorking, Surrey
Published On: October 9, 2026

Dorking Clock Centre in South Street recently welcomed the Department for Work and Pensions film crew through its doors – and this is the reason why.

Owner Ian has recruited the newest member of his team through the Youth Jobs Grant, a government initiative designed to help young people into employment.

His new recruit became the first person to start a job through the scheme, putting Dorking Clock Centre on the radar of the Department for Work and Pensions and bringing the Good Morning Britain cameras to town.

It’s another step in what has been a period of real growth for the business.

When we celebrated Dorking Clock Centre’s second anniversary last year, the Dorking team had three people. As they approach their third anniversary at the end of this month, that team has grown to five.

And they’re not stopping there!

After also having a really positive experience welcoming a young person into the business for work experience, they’re keen to explore more ways that local businesses can help young people gain experience, develop skills and get that important first step into employment.

It’s really exciting to see an independent Dorking business thinking differently about growth – and creating opportunities for our young people along the way.

Could your business benefit from the Youth Jobs Grant?

The government scheme offers eligible employers up to £3,000 for recruiting a young person aged 18–24 who has been receiving Universal Credit and looking for work for at least six months.

If you’re a local business considering recruiting, you can find out more about eligibility and how to apply through the official Youth Jobs Grant guidance on GOV.UK.

Because Dorking isn’t only a brilliant place to shop, eat and explore – it’s a place to start a business, grow a business and try new ways of doing business too.

And when those ideas are interesting enough to bring national television to our town, it’s something to shout about!

Let’s give the whole Dorking Clock Centre team a big congratulations – and here’s to plenty more growth ahead.
