What Are the Four Pillars?

The Four Pillars are the main areas Hello Dorking works on to support the town. They help us decide how to use the BID levy and guide the projects we run for local businesses and the wider community. The four pillars are:

  1. Digital Support for Businesses
  2. Campaigns That Promote the Town
  3. Improving Dorking’s Public Spaces
  4. Practical Help for Local Businesses

Everything we do fits under one of these. From better online visibility and public events to cleaner streets and business advice, the aim is always the same: to make Dorking a great place to live, work and visit; and to support the people who make that possible.

1. Digital Support for Businesses

Hello Dorking promotes the town’s businesses through its website, social media, newsletters, and digital campaigns. The aim is to increase visibility and awareness of what’s on offer in Dorking, helping to draw more visitors to the area and support the local economy.

Our Dorking Business Directory is a key part of this work. It provides a central place to find shops, services, hospitality and more. All levy-paying businesses can have a listing with contact details, a short description and a website link. If you don’t have one or it needs updating just let us know.

Even if a business doesn’t have its own website or online presence, being listed in the Dorking Business Directory can still help it show up in search results. Hello Dorking’s website ranks well in Google, so listings often appear high when people search for local services.

This work helps more people find local businesses, visit the town and support what Dorking has to offer.

2. Campaigns That Promote the Town

Hello Dorking runs campaigns that highlight the town and its businesses. These include seasonal promotions, event advertising and work linked to national awareness days.

We use posters, videos, social media, press coverage and window displays to spread the word. The aim is to show what Dorking has to offer and encourage more people to visit.

Campaign topics are based on the time of year, local events and feedback from businesses. For example, you can see our campaigns for Christmas, Halloween and the Walking Festival. We are also producing seasonal printed guides for the town to showcase events and shopping and hospitality offerings throughout the year.

Everything is designed to support the town centre and help businesses attract more customers.

3. Improving Dorking’s Public Spaces

Hello Dorking works to make the town centre feel safe, clean and welcoming. This includes projects like extra planting, Christmas decorations, litter picking, new signage and repairs to street furniture, and applying for grants to further support this.

We also work with partners like Mole Valley District Council and Surrey Police to report issues and help improve public spaces. This might include graffiti removal, fly-tipping, lighting or maintenance.

Our goal is to make Dorking a pleasant place for everyone; residents, businesses and visitors. The better the town feels, the more likely people are to spend time here and come back again.

4. Practical Help for Local Businesses

Hello Dorking supports local businesses with day-to-day help that makes a difference. This includes one-to-one advice, email support and useful updates through our newsletters .

We also run training and networking sessions to help improve skills and opportunities for collaboration, promote business news and help with things like business grants or getting listed in our Business Directory.

If you’re a levy payer and need support or have an idea that could help your business or the wider town, just get in touch. We’re here to help where we can.

Dorking Community Engagement

How It All Fits Together

The Four Pillars are designed to work together. Digital support, promotion, public space improvements and practical business help all feed into the same goal: making Dorking a better place to visit, live and do business.

When the town feels welcoming, more people come in. When businesses are easier to find, they get more attention. When we promote what’s on offer, more people explore what Dorking has. And when businesses are supported day to day, they’re in a stronger position to grow.

Each area strengthens the others. That’s how we make the most of the BID levy and focus on what brings real benefits to the town.
