The BID - who we are
Published On: September 19, 2023

First, the strategy.

BID stands for Business Improvement District, and our function is to support collaboration within a defined geographical area to enhance the local trading environment and drive economic growth. Businesses within the BID area contribute a mandatory levy, which funds projects and initiatives designed to raise the area’s attractiveness and competitiveness.

But what does that mean in practice?

It means we’re here to boost our local business community and enhance our High Street and surrounding areas. Our main focus has to be on supporting businesses within the BID area, whose levy payments enable us to bring new, exciting and innovative changes to the town. But while these initiatives prioritise the BID area, the aim is that businesses and areas beyond this also benefit.

We also champion our BID businesses on our social media channels, supporting them through a series of campaigns and posts to raise awareness and highlight the amazing range of products and services Dorking offers.

Building a positive space for all

And we understand there can sometimes be frustrations, and we are used to having some difficult conversations, but when conducted in a mutually respectful way these exchanges can bring positive results and generate great ideas. Unfortunately when these conversations become abusive or threatening we have to take action to protect our people and our community.

But on a positive note, we are lucky to be surrounded by incredible businesses run by inspirational people who we are honoured to represent, and by bringing together resources and expertise, the Dorking BID aims to create a more vibrant, appealing, and sustainable business environment, ultimately benefiting our businesses, our people, and the community as a whole.

Thank you for being part of our community.
