There’s a magical walled garden at the foot of Box Hill that is bringing positive change to people’s lives through friendship and gardening.
The Patchworking Garden Project was established in 2014 and is run entirely by volunteers that get involved in gardening and crafting, learning new skills in a safe, friendly and welcoming space. Many also just visit to simply sit and enjoy nature and the company of others. The project aims to benefit the lives of those that it touches, with a special focus on welcoming those with a physical or mental health condition, learning disabilities, dementia, isolation or experiencing bereavement.
Operating in the stunning natural environment of a walled garden on the northern edge of Dorking with views to Box Hill, the garden aims to be inspirational, relaxing and comforting to those in need. Open three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday), the garden offers a morning and afternoon session each day and each session has a team of six to eight support volunteers, working with roughly 12 supported volunteers.
As everyone attends the same session each week, there is a great opportunity to gain confidence and form friendships. Supported volunteers may choose to work independently alongside others or together in a group activity either in the garden, the poly-tunnel or our large workshop where a variety of crafts are available. They are also welcome simply to sit and enjoy the peace and beauty of this nurturing space. Each session starts and finishes by gathering together around the table to share tea, coffee and cake.
The Patchworking Garden Project will be opening its gate on Sunday 18th July 2021 for a free-to-attend Open Day, from 11am to 4pm. There will be lots of free activities on offer for children to enjoy, including crafts, music, dancing and a treasure hunt! The Open Day will also provide the opportunity to enjoy the garden, learn more about the project, support the transformational work that is being undertaken, browse fantastic stalls and get involved in activities.
Those that would like to support this important community project, can also choose to buy a ticket for the Mole Valley Community Lottery that has its first draw on Saturday 24th July. This costs £1 per week for the chance to win prizes of up to £25,000 and a portion of the money raised will go towards supporting work in the garden.
